Nicole Courtney, MSN, APRN, FNP-C

About Nicole:

Hello, I'm Nicole Courtney. I am so excited to be a provider at Shock Therapy Group, LLC. I'm a Family Nurse Practitioner in Central Indiana, who will soon be dual-certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.  I am also a Certified Substance Abuse Practitioner, which means I have my substance abuse counseling certification. I have been married for over 20 years, we have 2 boys and a 3rd son that we have taken in. I even allowed my mother (who is the best) to live with us for the past 13 years and hopefully many more. We love our fur babies, probably more than our kids. We have two Great Danes and four cats. I decided late in life (in my 30's) to become a nurse.  I graduated in 2012. I went back to school as a Family Nurse Practitioner and graduated in Feb 2020. Covid happened and the world stopped. I was unable to take my boards until Dec 2020. So, I quit my job and went to work for FEMA.  Where did I go...to New York City during the height of COVID for 3 months. I came home for a month and left with them again to Texas for a month. I worked in primary care for 2 years as a nurse practitioner and worked on the side of addictions. Addictions have become my passion.  Many of my patients have underlying depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc, and have not been getting treated due to a history of being judged.  That led me to go back to school for my post-master's Psychiatric NP certification. I love to travel and spend time with our boys and I feel I never have enough time to spend with my mother. My husband is my biggest supporter.

WHAT TREATMENT METHODS AND TOOLS DO YOU UTILIZE?

Every patient is different, so every treatment is individualized based on your symptoms/duration/trauma history/availability. I'm working hard to meet you where you're at in the process. Depending on the situation, medication may be involved whether it is short-term or longer-term. Therapy is another incredible tool to help talk through those things that may be bottled up and get additional perspectives and coping skills. Doing both therapy and medication management together where needed helps me to really conquer the underlying issues because I know what's going on in your world!

WHAT ARE MY BIGGEST STRENGTHS?

I believe my greatest strength is my compassion for my patients. I believe in treating people the way you want to be treated. I DO NOT pass judgment. All of us have families and friends, some that may need more than others. Everyone struggles at some point. I understand because I am just like you dealing with my own family and friends who need more, including family members with addiction concerns.  I typically work with adolescents to 65 years of age. I want to be your supporter, as well as your provider!

What can a patient expect to take away from a session with me?

My patients tell me often that I am compassionate, understanding, and not judgmental. They feel as though I take the time to listen to them and really hear what they're saying. I spend time with them to get to know my patients - we are on this road together and a partnership is critical. I want to hear what the patients have to say so that I can accurately diagnose and treat them. You are never alone because we will work as a team to find the solution.
